Growing up on the Jersey Shore surfing and serving as a lifeguard during the summers, Ed McKnight says he loved the lifestyle. He even considered staying in New Jersey after college and following in his father's footsteps as a doctor.

"I think it was in the plan for me to, at least, attempt to become a doctor. But, honestly, pre-med proved too difficult. Most of my friends at college were going on to law school and my interests turned to law."

He was attending Creighton University in Omaha at the time, and graduated with a degree in psychology. He decided after college to continue west and attend Western State University College of Law. He married his long-time girlfriend, Noreen, during his second year there. Ed began his law career as house Counsel for Hartford Insurance where he began practicing the defense side of workers' compensation. He later worked for several Orange County firms, and it was at one of these firms that he met partner Mike McKibbin.

"When Mike left to join Ed Benthale in a new firm, I knew they had the potential to put together an excellent workers' comp defense firm. It wasn't long after that I decided to make the move as well."

During the next 11 years, the three partners built a strong and stable practice. Ed opened the Los Angeles office of Benthale, McKibbin & McKnight, and now heads up efforts in the Orange County office.

Today, far from cold waters of Jersey, Ed still surfs, and his medical pursuits are all related to workers' comp defense. After more than 26 years as an attorney, he is exactly where he wants to be.

"I enjoy what I'm doing and the people I work with. Every day is challenging and rewarding at the same time."

Ed surfs regularly teaming up with his son Eddie to search for waves from San Clemente to Huntington Beach. He started surfing in 1967 and except for his years in college at Creighton University in Omaha, he has been a regular at the beach whenever time allowed.

"I'm proud of what we've accomplished in steady growth and stability, and look forward to keeping our practice on track. I'm happy doing what I do with the firm and with my family in a place where I feel at home."
